ISAIAS CROW: TIME TRAVELER @ OPEN SPACE LA

Crewest + Open Space Present:

TIME TRAVELER
A collection of paintings by Isaias Crow.

Curated by Man One.

TIME TRAVELER - is a collection of paintings inspired by Isaias Crow's travels on the physical and spiritual plane through time and space. These paintings were all painted or conceived in various geographical locations as far east as Derry, Ireland; London, UK and Paris, France to as far south as Costa Rica and within the American continent in Houston, Albuquerque, Oklahoma, Trenton, New York, Miami, Los Angeles and at his art studio in San Diego, CA.

While traveling, Crow received epiphanies about life, relationships, love, death and about being a soul at the core. The connection and access we have to other souls living in the spirit realm and our pre-birth plan - of what we "chose" to experience while experiencing life. All the while Crow is painting canvases and murals in the places that he's visiting with the materials that are or aren't available and with that also discovering different techniques and approaches to his art. As a result, he's transmitting positive energy frequencies from all these different locations and conveying that onto the canvas.

This collection compiles all these different experiences into one moment in time - Isaias Crow's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, California. We present to you TIME TRAVELER.

"I remember while in London:

Standing still at the London Bridge Tube Station, I had a realization, I like it here. The tunnels, the connections of subways, the diverse cultures that are all moving from one line to another . Countless people traveling to their destination. The energy is like none other that I've encountered other than New York's subways . I hold back tears. I have an understanding that what is inside is outside. This infrastructure is the same / a replica of how our souls navigate to arrive to this space - earth. In the tube we all travel as one - we get off at different destinations and at different times.. Yet we all came from the same source - the same train station.

Reflecting on my artwork now, I see that creating the C-Rollers (paint rollers I cut out to create different linear sizes) and all the pattern work with multitude of colors is my rendition - my understanding of this interior and exterior infrastructure - the plan - the pre-birth plan.

I'm on route - I'm on my path - I'm time-traveling. I'm a TIME TRAVELER."

-excerpt from Isaias Crow's e-book "The Crow's Aura"

$MALL CHANGE FEATURING PROBLAK

$MALL CHANGE: A Solo Exhibit by Problak
Crewest (Front Room Gallery) opens  July 7, 2012, 7-10pm

Image 9

Boston-based artist, Rob "Problak" Gibbs, will also make his debut exhibit in Crewest's Front Room Gallery on Saturday, July, 7th, 2012, from 7-10pm. His new body of work, Small Change celebrates the artist's first solo show in Los Angeles.

When asked what inspired his new works, Problak explains:
"The phrase, 'a little goes a long way', inspired this body of work. I think the average person can easily overlook how change can quickly accumulate. When change comes together, it's value and power matches it's weight in a variety of ways--especially in our consumer culture. This collection showcases some change I've earned over time. I wanted to remix the value of what we accumulate and probably overlook everyday. Please enjoy the "EP" to my upcoming show. I hope you get to walk away with a small change in your point of view. Grow on flow on."--Problak

About Rob "Problak" Gibbs
Rob “Problak” Gibbs grew up in Roxbury, MA venturing between Lenox St. apartments and Orchard Park projects. From a young age, he had a vision of beautifying the ghettos of Boston with graffiti art—an art form that is frequently over looked, under valued and misunderstood. The concept that a picture is worth an infinite amount of words inspired Rob and provided him with the opportunity to take ownership of one of our culture’s modern hieroglyphics: graffiti. He developed a vision of beautifying Boston purely by instinct, experiencing his “calling” as a young man, a child of the HipHop golden age.

The need to place social consciousness in HipHop culture is a driving force behind Problak’s creativity. His work impels the viewer to allow imagination to become a playground for testing boundaries and breaking rules. Rob is a painter, muralist and graffiti artist who was one of six urban teens to co-found the non-profit youth development organization, Artists For Humanity (AFH) in 1991. Through this innovative non-profit organization, he has been blessed with a career in the arts that has spanned decades and has been able to work as a mentor to young people in the creative process. As AFH’s Paint Studio Director, Rob applies his experiences as an academic scholarship winner, an Americorps Fellow and a Prudential Youth Leadership Fellow, to overseeing the art studios, leading the painting instruction, and serving as a key team member in AFH’s efforts to expand into neighboring communities, sharing the proven youth development model of arts and entrepreneurship training.

Problak has demonstrated a continued commitment to passing on the tools, techniques and traditions he has learned to the next generation of artists, serving as both mentor and inspiration to countless young people through his work as a co-founder and studio manager at Artists for Humanity. Rob has conducted arts/youth mentoring workshops for Girls, Inc., The Boston Foundation, Boston Housing Authority, and Youth Build, Washington, DC. Gibbs is a recipient of a number of awards, including The Goodnight Initiative’s Civic Artist Award, and The Mass Industry Committee’s 2006 Graffiti Artist of the Year award. He has also served as a guest lecturer, teaching one-day sessions on graffiti art and culture to students in Northeastern University’s Foundations of Black Culture: HipHop course.

With an extensive repertoire in several media, Problak’s work has challenged both the viewer and himself the artist, to see and celebrate graffiti’s evolution for over 15 years. His work as a solo artist and as a member of Boston’s A.L.A crew, has been seen across the world, in exhibitions such as All City Evolution, at the Fourth Wall Gallery in Boston, MA, and The Sharpie Show at Crewest in Los Angeles, CA.

EVOLVE WITH GRAHAM CURRAN

" As an artist I want to convey a message to the viewer through selected imagery, invoking any sort of response is my objective. My subject matter always changes depending on what I find fascinating, frustrating or beautiful in the world. My goal is to evolve my art, to never become stagnant." - Graham Curran 2011

Graham Curran is an artist from Torrance, CA and is showing at Crewest during December for the Crewest Holiday Bazaar. Born in 1986 Graham graduated from CSULB in 2010 with a BFA in Illustration.

When selecting the artists who were going to show for the December show, it was Grahams beautiful imagery painted on boxing gloves which really captured our eye. We saw his artwork painted on boxing gloves to be very unique and something we definitely wanted to show and display for all to see.

Look below for a sneak peak of these beautiful boxing gloves, inspired by Rocky IV, in which Graham has titled "The Fighter's".

"The Fighters" are not all we will have on display by Graham Curran. Also on display by this artist will be the above painting titled "Big Glow", a set of Russian nesting dolls titled "It’s a Zoo in Here" and a custom Munny inspired by Mad Men titled "Mad Munny".

If you want to see "It's a Zoo in Here" and "Mad Munny" as well as the other artwork by Graham, you will need to come on by and check out these pieces while they are on display in December.

If you have any questions, you may contact us via email at info@crewest.com and we will be happy to assist you.

Please join us for a Pre-Comic Con Celebration during the opening reception of “Unearthed” on Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Crewest and Curator Luna George is proud to announce the opening of our newest installation “UNEARTHED”, which will exist on our walls as a larger than life visual comic book brought to life by some of our best graffiti and street urban artists. With a storyline written by author and artist Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vaca, the walls of the gallery will become an actual comic book live for all to see and immerse themselves into. In addition, Crewest will publish and release “UNEARTHED” the comic book featuring the artwork in the exhibit and storyline just in time for this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

 5.1.3By Won OneABC

UNEARTHED” features works by underground urban artists from around the world who have created visual elements in the form of never before seen characters who unearth from the underground in the year of 2012 on the day of the Apocalypse. Each of the exhibiting artists all share a strong ability in creating characters whether designed for street murals, album covers, published comic strips or actual comic books. We are very excited about this unique pairing of underground urban talent telling the tale of an Apocalyptic 2012 within the context of a gallery exhibition. Concept created by Luna George.

TOP OF THE DOME - FEATURED ARTIST: ALONY'S ART

Crewest steps inside the colorful world of Alony’s Art and learns what inspires and motivates her to create, as well as discusses her current piece “The Mad Scientist” which will be on display at this years Top of the Dome at Crewest.

First off the basics, tell us a little about you.

Hello, I am Alonys. I don’t know what would be considered basic about me, so I’ll try, I am an artist, wife, no kids, but we have an amazing cat named Meow. I’m obsessed with music, love life and feel blessed to be an artist...basically.

Tell us, what inspires you to create art?

Having a voice through colour is what inspires me.

The things that inspire me daily are as random as each day in life. I could be watching television, be on the net, hear a song, have a conversation... it really could be anything. Knowing that my perception could be understood or connect with another person, simply by translating what I feel through colour is inspiring to me. It’s an art form that can, without a word spoken, speak volumes to so many across many lines.

Who are your influences and why?

My list continues to grow regarding artists as I grow not only older but artistically. There is no denying Jackson Pollack inspired many of my early pieces and continues too. There is a sense of contained freedom in his work to me. Some of his work has a musical undertone, like a rhythm beats beneath the layers of paint. Pollack is comparable to a composer of a song that you play over and over again, each time taking you on another journey. His work leaves you wondering...how did he create this, making you love it even more.

I also have a great love for Frida Kahlo because her fiery spirit burns infinitely. I think of her often when I am creating artwork in my studio, a.k.a. Lab77. The emotion within her work translates in so many ways that all can feel, no matter what path they’ve walked in life. I want people to feel that when they see or collect my art.

What motivates you to be an artist?

Besides knowing that I am blessed to have this gift, and also knowing if I did not grow as an artist I would be going against a destiny chosen for me....

It’s also turning something old into something new and valuable, and ultimately helping tell stories about our generation. You always need to think, what will be left behind. What will they learn about us in the future from what we’ve created?

Art has always aided in telling the story of history. Vinyl and compact discs have nearly become relics, if not deemed by most as “garbage”. That idea alone motivated me to make art that incorporates ‘everyday’ items in our current life, and transform them.

You appear to be an artist who chooses interesting objects as your canvas, what would you consider to be the perfect canvas and why?

I honestly don’t think I can pick a “perfect” canvas. I started on paper bags, then moved onto tables, mirrors, cymbals, canvas, you name it. Basically anything I could get my hands on. My most recent has been bamboo, for my accessories line. The texture is amazing. I love painting vinyl. That’s def. a favorite. No surface is safe around me. They are all perfect!!!

In your bio, you mention an “insane world”, why do you consider the world as being insane and how is that reflected in your art?

The world is insane to me, because within all this beauty we still manage to voluntarily destroy ourselves everyday in some way shape or form. I feel we all genuinely want the same thing, meaning harmony, but somewhere we crave that destruction and pain, and to me that is “insane”. In my work I try to reflect these notions through the use of colour, mixed with what I call “beautiful crazy”. The idea I may convey within a particular piece may be dark, but the vibrant use of colour distracts your senses to see something positive and inviting..

Tell us abut the piece you have on display for this Year’s Top of the Dome VI?

The piece I created for this years celebration is “The Mad Scientist”. This sums up my idea of the state of the world today as we transform within the digital age, not knowing if and when to push “the button” or if in fact its already been pushed. In my piece, the skull becomes the nucleus for all the negative and positive possibilities. It’s a question of life or death, and its up to the collector to balance the equation.

Any last words?

Thank you Crewest for the invitation to be a part of this amazing show. Also thank you to my husband, family, friends, and my amazing collectors for inspiring me to live Life in Colour and create art.
