ISAIAS CROW: TIME TRAVELER @ OPEN SPACE LA

Crewest + Open Space Present:

TIME TRAVELER
A collection of paintings by Isaias Crow.

Curated by Man One.

TIME TRAVELER - is a collection of paintings inspired by Isaias Crow's travels on the physical and spiritual plane through time and space. These paintings were all painted or conceived in various geographical locations as far east as Derry, Ireland; London, UK and Paris, France to as far south as Costa Rica and within the American continent in Houston, Albuquerque, Oklahoma, Trenton, New York, Miami, Los Angeles and at his art studio in San Diego, CA.

While traveling, Crow received epiphanies about life, relationships, love, death and about being a soul at the core. The connection and access we have to other souls living in the spirit realm and our pre-birth plan - of what we "chose" to experience while experiencing life. All the while Crow is painting canvases and murals in the places that he's visiting with the materials that are or aren't available and with that also discovering different techniques and approaches to his art. As a result, he's transmitting positive energy frequencies from all these different locations and conveying that onto the canvas.

This collection compiles all these different experiences into one moment in time - Isaias Crow's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, California. We present to you TIME TRAVELER.

"I remember while in London:

Standing still at the London Bridge Tube Station, I had a realization, I like it here. The tunnels, the connections of subways, the diverse cultures that are all moving from one line to another . Countless people traveling to their destination. The energy is like none other that I've encountered other than New York's subways . I hold back tears. I have an understanding that what is inside is outside. This infrastructure is the same / a replica of how our souls navigate to arrive to this space - earth. In the tube we all travel as one - we get off at different destinations and at different times.. Yet we all came from the same source - the same train station.

Reflecting on my artwork now, I see that creating the C-Rollers (paint rollers I cut out to create different linear sizes) and all the pattern work with multitude of colors is my rendition - my understanding of this interior and exterior infrastructure - the plan - the pre-birth plan.

I'm on route - I'm on my path - I'm time-traveling. I'm a TIME TRAVELER."

-excerpt from Isaias Crow's e-book "The Crow's Aura"

ABOUT THE ARTIST: RELIC

L.A. writer RELIC blends urban style and sensibility with renaissance-quality execution.

Staking claim to the name in ‘87, Relic found that graffiti was the spark that ignited his creativity. He found comrades in the Second To None art crew (successors of L.A.’s first graffiti crew) who helped propel his work by providing inspiration and guidance through art and expression.

Armed with the knowledge that there could be a lucrative career in art, he enrolled at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design.

The following years brought opportunities highlighted by the creation of murals and art for numerous motion pictures and television shows. Knowledge combined with scholastic discipline provided the necessary elements to extend his skills into art directing.

In 1996, Relic and Tempt co-founded BIGTIME: The Magazine of Urban Art & Expression. Their contributions have set industry standards, gaining BIGTIME acclaim as the “Best Graffiti Magazine” by the LA Weekly.

Relic’s work has been showcased at numerous museums and galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Smithsonian.

Graffiti art has gained worldwide attention. It extends its hand and appeals to all people of today’s diverse culture. At the forefront of this new generation is RELIC who—for over 25 years—has propelled L.A. graffiti art to the forefront of today’s urban audience.

In August 2012, RELIC will be presenting in the Crewest Front Gallery his very first LA solo show, KUYA.  KUYA opens Saturday, August 4, 2012 and will be on view through August 28, 2012.

NEO-INDIGENOUS A SOLO EXHIBIT BY VICTOR "MARKA27" QUINONEZ

Marka27 Brings Neo Indigenous to Los Angeles Crewest Gallery - July 7th, 2012, 7-10pm

Victor "MARKA27" Quiñonez brings his critically acclaimed new body of work, Neo Indigenous, to the City of Angels on Saturday, July 7, 2012, from 7-10pm. Hot off the heels of his packed-house New York City premiere, MARKA27 indulges Angelino tastemakers at Crewest Gallery (110 Winston Street, Los Angeles, 90013) with his newest mix-media exhibit. From July 7 - 29 art lovers will journey through the artist’s exploration of binding ancient Aztec, African, and Asian art forms with modern pop culture and street art.

Neo Indigenous celebrates Marka27’s highly-anticipated return to Los Angeles. Representing a shift in the artist’s cultural consciousness, Neo Indigenous embodies Marka27’s quest to bridge past with present, illustrating his yearning to bring deeper meaning to both old and new art forms. By juxtaposing ancient elements with contemporary design aesthetics, Marka27 reveals both a connection and a disjuncture in the process. Challenging viewers to confront the existing practice of commodifying art, the exhibit leaves a lasting impression-- a mark Marka27 has predicated his reputation on.

Using multiple mediums such as paintings, collectible vinyl toys and speakers, silk screen panels, and prints, Neo Indigenous is a sensory feast of the artist’s ability to float seamlessly between varying art forms. As a special treat and tribute to a city he once called home, never-before-seen works will be unveiled and the artist himself will create a live installation piece. Having worked with clients such as Pioneer Electronics, VH1, Disney, Scion, and Kidrobot, Marka27’s LA premiere is the go-to event of the summer!

About Victor "Marka27" Quiñonez:

Born in Juarez, Mexico, and raised in Dallas, Texas, Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez’s foray into the art world began in the city’s streets mastering the art of graffiti. Advancing to earn his BFA from The Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, Marka27 became a household name for his “audio canvas” series and elaborately executed installation art and murals.

Marka27's artwork has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and showcased alongside artists such as: Futura, David Choe, Ron English and Gary Basemen, and has appeared in lifestyle magazines and books such as Graffiti Planet, Burning New York, I am Plastic Too, and gracing the cover of Flux-Designer Toys. His artwork has sold through the world-renowned Freeman's Auction House.

Now based in New York City, Marka27’s quest for artistic exploration continues. Breaking beyond the canvas’ confines, he created to critical acclaim the MIniGods: Givers of Divine Sound©, a high-end line of designer vinyl toy speakers. His latest body of work, Neo-Indigenous© is a deep look into indigenous ancient aesthetics fused with street art, pop culture, and personal life experience.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: AXIS

Photo by: Eriberto Oriol © ForbiddenArtLA.com

Showing in June at Crewest Gallery in the Front Room is AXIS.

Here is a little background on the artist as well as a sneak peak image of artwork AXIS will be showing during his solo show "RECLUSE":

AXIS (born March 26, 1973 in London, England) is a contemporary illustrator/working class fine artist who emerged from Los Angeles’ seminal graffiti scene in the 1980s. He is most noted for his convoluted and hyper-stylized freehand characters.

As a child, Axis moved from London to Los Angeles with his family and developed a number of musical and artistic influences including Mozart, Black Sabbath, Frank Frazetta, Rick Griffin, Black Flag, Norman Rockwell, and even Monty Python’s Flying Circus. An early convert to skateboarding and punk rock, Axis began experimenting with graffiti art in 1985, and joined L.A.’s legendary CBS Crew in 1988. By the mid-90’s he had cemented his reputation as one of the most prolific street artists working in Los Angeles. Though his career has largely unfolded outside of the graffiti landscape, his skate-punk origins continue to shape his engorged aesthetic and politicized black humor.

In addition to his artwork, Axis is also widely known as a musician. Having received formal music training (harpsichord, cello, piano) at a young age, Axis formed Los Angeles hard-core/Metal band “The Pain” (lead guitarist, songwriter) in 2004. He has recorded two full-length albums and has toured Europe and the United States.

Axis lives in Los Angeles, California where he continues to paint, and play music everyday. And he skates when he can.

To see more of Axis’ work, check out www.stylepig.com.

Artwork by AXIS will be on display June 14 through July 1 at Crewest.  Please email us at info@crewest.com with any questions.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Image 1

Image

Ten years ago renowned graffiti artist and Los Angeles native Man One founded Crewest Gallery in Alhambra, CA, just a few minutes east of Downtown. Crewest was founded with the mission to legitimatize graffiti art by giving talented graffiti artists a professional forum in which to showcase their art while simultaneously educating the broader art community and general public about the richness, complexity and technicality of graffiti art.

Now, in 2012, graffiti art is hot. Graffiti art is showing in museums and on television. Graffiti art is on fashion and architecture. Graffiti artists are having gallery shows and being collected all over the world. In fact, last year, one of the largest and most attended shows in the history of MOCA in Los Angeles was a graffiti art exhibit called ART IN THE STREETS, which ran from April through August in 2011 and made news worldwide.  Man One and Crewest Gallery blazed the trails that helped to make things like this possible for graffiti artists and their art form.

In the book Graffiti L.A., street art documentarian Steve Grody listed the opening of Crewest Gallery as a milestone event in the history of graffiti art in Los Angeles.

The evidence is clear. Over the last ten years, Crewest has helped many great artists gain notoriety and a bigger audience.  These artists include Patrick Martinez, Marka27, Siner, Victor Sepulveda, Sacred194, Syndrome, Cope2, Greg "Craola" Simkins, Kofie Augustine, WERC, Mear One, Asylm, Vyal One,  T-Kid, Ces and on and on.

Established and renowned artists who have exhibited at Crewest over the years include Chaz Bojorquez, George Yepes, Syd Mead, Estevan Oriol, Eriberto Oriol, Gusmano Cesaretti and international artists such as Daim & Seak (Germany), SOT & ICY (Iranian street artists), Dabs & Myla (Australia) had their first U.S. showings at Crewest.

Artists that will show at MISSION ACCOMPLISHED in May include:
AISE, ALEX "DEFER" KIZU, BRANDED, BRON THERON, CAB, CHAZ BOJORQUEZ, DAVE KAWANO, DCYPHER, EDGAR HOILL, ERIBERTO ORIOL, EVAN ESK, EYE ONE, FLYCAT, GEORGE CLINTON, GEORGE YEPES, GONZO247, GREGG STONE, GUSTAVO ALBERTO GARCIA VACA, HASTE, HECTOR “HEX TGO” RIOS, HUIT, JOHN CARR, JUAN CARLOS "HEAVEN" MUNOZ, KOFIE, MARIA KANE, MAX NEUTRA, MEAR ONE, MICHAEL PIZARRO, MR. PUPPET, MR.WANY, OSCAR MAGALLANES, OVERTON LOYD, PABLO CRISTI, RAPTUZ, RITZY PERIWINKLE, ROME, SAHL, SAND ONE, SCOTCH, SHERM, SKET, SLOKE, CRISTIAN “SMEAR” GHEORGHIU, STEVE GRODY, STEVE MARTINEZ, STREET PHANTOM, SYNDROME, VYAL ONE, AND MORE…

In the Front Room Man One “A DECADE OF GRAFFITI SPIRITS”:
As the founder and creative director for Crewest since its inception, Man One has predicted the rise of graffiti art as a viable and collectible art form.

As part of Crewest's 10 Year Anniversary exhibition, Man One will be featuring a mini-solo exhibit in the Front Room of the gallery showing the direction of his newest body of work.

SINERLANDIA

Available artwork slideshow below or click to Flickr:

Crewest is very proud to announce Siner will be debuting his first ever solo exhibit "Sinerlandia" on April 7th, 2012 at Crewest Gallery.

The exhibit will feature original artwork which proudly echoes the Los Angeles cultural landscape and street aesthetic.

For this show, Siner exhibits both the beauty of the tag, lettering style, and character involvement which is the basis for Los Angeles graffiti. He takes the viewer on a journey through the streets of South Central Los Angeles with art based on L.A. street culture.  While both forms of art exist on the streets, whether in the form of graffiti art on the wall or in the form of everyday street life of the Angelino, Siner is allowing the viewer to take an up close look into LA’s vivid cultural heritage as he sees it.

Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Siner has become one of the most influential writers on the L.A. scene and is best known for his intricate letter structure and free form flow. In the mid 1980’s Siner and his brother Sane started writing and founded the infamous LTS (Last To Survive) crew. He was heavily influenced by L.A. street culture and the Chicano muralists. Using Aztec, Mayan, and Mexican pop culture imagery, Siner reflects what it is like to have a sense of pride in one’s self and a respect for one’s cultural heritage.

Sinerlandia opens Saturday, April 7, 2012 and will be on view through April 29, 2012.  Opening Reception from 7 to 10 pm with live beats by DJ Phyz Ed and refreshments provided by Roaring Lion and Jarritos. Sinerlandia will be open during the Downtown Artwalk on Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 7 to 10pm.
