SINERLANDIA

Available artwork slideshow below or click to Flickr:

Crewest is very proud to announce Siner will be debuting his first ever solo exhibit "Sinerlandia" on April 7th, 2012 at Crewest Gallery.

The exhibit will feature original artwork which proudly echoes the Los Angeles cultural landscape and street aesthetic.

For this show, Siner exhibits both the beauty of the tag, lettering style, and character involvement which is the basis for Los Angeles graffiti. He takes the viewer on a journey through the streets of South Central Los Angeles with art based on L.A. street culture.  While both forms of art exist on the streets, whether in the form of graffiti art on the wall or in the form of everyday street life of the Angelino, Siner is allowing the viewer to take an up close look into LA’s vivid cultural heritage as he sees it.

Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Siner has become one of the most influential writers on the L.A. scene and is best known for his intricate letter structure and free form flow. In the mid 1980’s Siner and his brother Sane started writing and founded the infamous LTS (Last To Survive) crew. He was heavily influenced by L.A. street culture and the Chicano muralists. Using Aztec, Mayan, and Mexican pop culture imagery, Siner reflects what it is like to have a sense of pride in one’s self and a respect for one’s cultural heritage.

Sinerlandia opens Saturday, April 7, 2012 and will be on view through April 29, 2012.  Opening Reception from 7 to 10 pm with live beats by DJ Phyz Ed and refreshments provided by Roaring Lion and Jarritos. Sinerlandia will be open during the Downtown Artwalk on Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 7 to 10pm.

JAIME GUERRERO PAINTING LIVE TONIGHT @ CREWEST

Urban Geisha

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:  Jaime Guerrero will be painting live @7pm tonight at Crewest during the Dowtown Artwalk.  We are very excited to be able to share his talent as he paints live for everyone to enjoy.

To get to know Jaime Guerrero more, below find his artist statement and website:

"I'm a Freelance artist living in Los Angeles. Ever since I can remember I've had an urge to create. This strong desire has led me to become skilled in creative activities such as drawing and painting. Over the years my artistic interests have greatly expanded; art has always been about experimentation and discovery. It's a fluid process that I greatly enjoy.

My current work is concentrated around the entertainment industry, such as concept art for games, scripts, and commercials. I also do editorial illustrations as well as personal paintings. I incorporate traditional and digital techniques to my work, and try to find a balance between the two."  -Jaime Guerrero

SPECIAL THANKS TO ANDI GARCIA OF THE ARTILLERIST AND JAIME GUERRERO FOR COMING TOGETHER AND BRINGING THIS LIVE ART SESSION TO CREWEST!

EYE TO EYE

Bridging the gap between graffiti and art

Crewest and L. Croskey/Cannibal Flower would like to present "Eye to Eye" - a group show that finds graffiti artists and painters playing on common ground through the shared aesthetic principles of movement, color, and energy. This eclectic group of artists can evoke the visceral energy of a full burner within a gallery setting. It is not about graffiti, it is about the emotion of graffiti. The artists listed are all local Angelenos, some recognized, and some that deserve recognition, the latter being another purpose of this show – to introduce into the scene some new talent; to shed some new light into the walls.

Exhibiting Artists:                                                                                             Bill McEvoy, Brendan Tierney, Cody Lusby, David Cooley, Deryke Cardenas, Djembe and Canvas, Euth, Gregory Rodriguez, Gustavo Munoz, Gustavo Rimada, JoKa, Kelly Berg, L.Croskey, Michael Christy, Phil Santos, Preston Thomas, Rafael Isaac Delgado Jr., Steven Lopez, Tony Venegas

Please join us for a Pre-Comic Con Celebration during the opening reception of “Unearthed” on Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Crewest and Curator Luna George is proud to announce the opening of our newest installation “UNEARTHED”, which will exist on our walls as a larger than life visual comic book brought to life by some of our best graffiti and street urban artists. With a storyline written by author and artist Gustavo Alberto Garcia Vaca, the walls of the gallery will become an actual comic book live for all to see and immerse themselves into. In addition, Crewest will publish and release “UNEARTHED” the comic book featuring the artwork in the exhibit and storyline just in time for this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

 5.1.3By Won OneABC

UNEARTHED” features works by underground urban artists from around the world who have created visual elements in the form of never before seen characters who unearth from the underground in the year of 2012 on the day of the Apocalypse. Each of the exhibiting artists all share a strong ability in creating characters whether designed for street murals, album covers, published comic strips or actual comic books. We are very excited about this unique pairing of underground urban talent telling the tale of an Apocalyptic 2012 within the context of a gallery exhibition. Concept created by Luna George.

George Yepes Biography:

"BEST INDESCRIBABLE WALL ART" - BEST OF LOS ANGELES
George Yepes. "Muralist and Painter Yepes is Los Angeles' greatest
living Baroque artist".

Marc B. Haefele, Writer
LA WEEKLY

George Yepes face

"When it comes to sheer touch that combines beautiful control over line
and brushwork, yet seemingly spontaneous expression,
George Yepes is among the best. His darkly romantic excess can't help
but make you think he would have been Dante Gabriel
Rossetti's (1828 - 1882, London, England), equal among the
Pre-Raphaelites. But these saints and sinners are hardly a throwback.
Yepes' painting has a visual density and suggestiveness that is as
tantalizing to the intellect as it is arresting for the eye".

ArtScene
The Guide to over 450 Los Angeles Art Galleries and Museums

"Like Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto (1518 - 1594, Venice, Italy), George
Yepes has the ability to pull down from heaven the designs which God has
for humans
and paint them so people can discover through the paintings what they
are deaf to in words".

Dr. David Carrasco, Professor - History of Religions
Editor-in-Chief, Oxford Encyclopedia of Mesoamerican Cultures
Director, Moses Mesoamerican Archive and Research Project
Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America

Called "The City's Preeminent BadAss Muralist" (L.A. New Times - June 2000), and
named a "Treasure of Los Angeles" in 1997 by The Mayor and the Los
Angeles City Council, painter George Yepes: rises above and beyond the Los Angeles genre with a refined
renaissance bent. From religious iconography to erotica, Yepes brings a confidence and knowledge of his craft imbued with a contemporary street sense that combines the best of both worlds, where bravado meets classical standards.

Yepes' paintings are in forty museum collections and have been collected by a widely diverse audience, from
Sean Penn & Madonna, Cheech Marin, Patricia Arquette, Anthony Keidis, Quentin Tarantino,
and Robert Rodriguez. His Warner Bros. album cover for Los Lobos titled "La Pistola y el Corazon" is published as
one of the 'One Hundred Best Album Covers of All Time'.

Hollywood Actresses Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, and Patricia Arquette have modeled for Yepes paintings.
Also Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp were painted by Yepes for the El Mariachi Trilogy, “Mexico and Mariachis”.

From "Solamente Salma 2006"; "Grind House 2007"; and now "Machete 2009" staring Robert De Niro;
Jessica Alba; Lyndsay Lohan; Danny Trejo; and Cheech Marin:
George Yepes and movie director, Robert Rodriguez (with Quentin Tarantino):
creative giants each in his own rite, have combined their formidable force of talents
and given life to new collaborative artworks. Like Vampires robbing liquor stores from dusk till dawn,
George Yepes and Robert Rodriguez communicate with each other as they communicate with the world: with Two- Smokin' Barrels.

KORALIE

Coming to Crewest in July during the Sweet Things Exhibition, Koralie:

Born in 1977, Koralie originates from Montpellier in Southern France. Today she lives and works in New York / USA. Koralie is inspired by the eccentric manga culture and to the images derived from traditional Japan like geisha. Her character is a graphic icon mixing sensuality and modesty, elegance and flashy colors. She incorporate aesthetic elements taken from different cultures within her compositions: African braids, English curls, Russian dolls, Indian folklore, XVIth-century headgears, chandeliers... Koralie fancies elements of different origins and has achieved it harmoniously. Koralie also adds material to her paintings and she finds original wallpapers which make up the lavish background of her compositions. Koralie showed her work in galleries and in the streets around the world. She jumps from the canvas to the wall, from the wall to the computer and the computer to the canvas, the three of which are essential to her work.

SEW SEW KRAFTY PERFORMING LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LOS ANGELES

Crewest is very pleased to announce:

SEW SEW KRAFTY
Sew Sew Krafty will be performing live for the first time in Los Angeles their two new singles "Tuxedo Jackets" and "Boots". Both jams are slamming hot and we are so excited to be able to share them with you.

Dates Performing:
May 8th, 2010 Crewest 8th Year Anniversary Celebration
May 13, 2010 during the Downtown Artwalk

Sew Sew Krafty is Relish Lapel and MisOnederful. Confused? Don’t be. They are a perpetual forward thinking amalgamation of sound, speed, color, vibe, and unrestrained energy and frankly, anything they want to be!! Holistically…Relish Lapel is a visual artist; part sage, part poet, part provocateur and you know what the say” once you go green you never go back”. He was born in Brooklyn raised on Alpha Centauri so his inspiration and influence is truly ubiquitous. His creative doppelganger is of course, MisOnederful, who seemingly sprouted from the fertile soil of the Hawaiian Islands although we haven’t been able to confirm that because there are no birth records. In past incarnations her curriculum vitae includes traveling the world performing with such mortals as Stevie Wonder, Sting and Babyface, some of MisOnederfuls other rays of sunshine include designing custom clothing for some of Hollywood’s A-List. Back to Mr. Lapel’s past life: He was a part of the legendary Hip-Hop group the Jungle Brothers who during that period created the “Native Tongues” arguably Hip-Hop cultures first socially conscious movement. They had the dubious distinction of being the first Hip-Hop act to perform in China. Other notable moments include a performance at Wembley Stadium with 100,000 people watching to honor the release of Nelson Mandela. Sew Sew Krafty’s show is art in action and their music is un-genrelized and made with love.

BEFORE THE REVOLUTION

"A hundred years ago, Emiliano Zapata conscripted Our Lady of Guadalupe to serve as the symbol of the Mexican revolution. In Gusmano Cesaretti's world, she's made flesh and walks among us, facing her devotees' oppressors, packing heat, and reminding us that the first duty of the artist, like the revolutionary, is to survive." - David Em

NEW JTS BICYCLE PRINT

Check out this super cool print by JTS:

We asked JTS what kind of paper they used and what inspired them to create their print and this is what they had to say:

"I used newsprint on half and unbleached archival on the other half. I figured there would be allot of fixies and cruisers and some low rider bikes so I wanted to mix it up and hark back to the real old school shit."

This print and many other cool prints will be on display and for sale during the Pedals and Prints exhibition (April 3rd through April 27th). You will also be able to purchase prints online at www.crewest.com.
