ISAIAS CROW: TIME TRAVELER @ OPEN SPACE LA

Crewest + Open Space Present:

TIME TRAVELER
A collection of paintings by Isaias Crow.

Curated by Man One.

TIME TRAVELER - is a collection of paintings inspired by Isaias Crow's travels on the physical and spiritual plane through time and space. These paintings were all painted or conceived in various geographical locations as far east as Derry, Ireland; London, UK and Paris, France to as far south as Costa Rica and within the American continent in Houston, Albuquerque, Oklahoma, Trenton, New York, Miami, Los Angeles and at his art studio in San Diego, CA.

While traveling, Crow received epiphanies about life, relationships, love, death and about being a soul at the core. The connection and access we have to other souls living in the spirit realm and our pre-birth plan - of what we "chose" to experience while experiencing life. All the while Crow is painting canvases and murals in the places that he's visiting with the materials that are or aren't available and with that also discovering different techniques and approaches to his art. As a result, he's transmitting positive energy frequencies from all these different locations and conveying that onto the canvas.

This collection compiles all these different experiences into one moment in time - Isaias Crow's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, California. We present to you TIME TRAVELER.

"I remember while in London:

Standing still at the London Bridge Tube Station, I had a realization, I like it here. The tunnels, the connections of subways, the diverse cultures that are all moving from one line to another . Countless people traveling to their destination. The energy is like none other that I've encountered other than New York's subways . I hold back tears. I have an understanding that what is inside is outside. This infrastructure is the same / a replica of how our souls navigate to arrive to this space - earth. In the tube we all travel as one - we get off at different destinations and at different times.. Yet we all came from the same source - the same train station.

Reflecting on my artwork now, I see that creating the C-Rollers (paint rollers I cut out to create different linear sizes) and all the pattern work with multitude of colors is my rendition - my understanding of this interior and exterior infrastructure - the plan - the pre-birth plan.

I'm on route - I'm on my path - I'm time-traveling. I'm a TIME TRAVELER."

-excerpt from Isaias Crow's e-book "The Crow's Aura"

MEXICO CITY LOVES MARKA27

After a successful opening night for Marka27's "Neo Indigenous" solo show featuring

artist "Problak" in the front room of our gallery, Marka27 set off to visit his native land Mexico with his lovely
wife Liza Quiñonez.

We just got this report back from him and in his own words:

"The destination was Mexico DF (Distrito Federal). The trip was a total of five days and an
incredible experience filled with politics, culture, ancient history, street art, graffiti, designer vinyl, delicious food and good friends with good vibes!

It goes without saying words cannot describe how amazing the experience was. It was a humbling experience seeing the pyramids at Teotihuacan, meeting amazing local artists and designers.

Marka27 and Liza would like to thank the people of Mexico D.F specifically:
Oscar from "Vinyles Chiles" Victor Hugo Celaya from "Arto" Art Beyond Museums, and Gonzalo from "Mammut" for hooking up a wall for me to paint on the last day.
Thanks also to Libre, and Gato for the beers and good laughs!

We hope you enjoy the photos and highly recommend Mexico D.F for your next adventure."
- Marka27

$MALL CHANGE FEATURING PROBLAK

$MALL CHANGE: A Solo Exhibit by Problak
Crewest (Front Room Gallery) opens  July 7, 2012, 7-10pm

Image 9

Boston-based artist, Rob "Problak" Gibbs, will also make his debut exhibit in Crewest's Front Room Gallery on Saturday, July, 7th, 2012, from 7-10pm. His new body of work, Small Change celebrates the artist's first solo show in Los Angeles.

When asked what inspired his new works, Problak explains:
"The phrase, 'a little goes a long way', inspired this body of work. I think the average person can easily overlook how change can quickly accumulate. When change comes together, it's value and power matches it's weight in a variety of ways--especially in our consumer culture. This collection showcases some change I've earned over time. I wanted to remix the value of what we accumulate and probably overlook everyday. Please enjoy the "EP" to my upcoming show. I hope you get to walk away with a small change in your point of view. Grow on flow on."--Problak

About Rob "Problak" Gibbs
Rob “Problak” Gibbs grew up in Roxbury, MA venturing between Lenox St. apartments and Orchard Park projects. From a young age, he had a vision of beautifying the ghettos of Boston with graffiti art—an art form that is frequently over looked, under valued and misunderstood. The concept that a picture is worth an infinite amount of words inspired Rob and provided him with the opportunity to take ownership of one of our culture’s modern hieroglyphics: graffiti. He developed a vision of beautifying Boston purely by instinct, experiencing his “calling” as a young man, a child of the HipHop golden age.

The need to place social consciousness in HipHop culture is a driving force behind Problak’s creativity. His work impels the viewer to allow imagination to become a playground for testing boundaries and breaking rules. Rob is a painter, muralist and graffiti artist who was one of six urban teens to co-found the non-profit youth development organization, Artists For Humanity (AFH) in 1991. Through this innovative non-profit organization, he has been blessed with a career in the arts that has spanned decades and has been able to work as a mentor to young people in the creative process. As AFH’s Paint Studio Director, Rob applies his experiences as an academic scholarship winner, an Americorps Fellow and a Prudential Youth Leadership Fellow, to overseeing the art studios, leading the painting instruction, and serving as a key team member in AFH’s efforts to expand into neighboring communities, sharing the proven youth development model of arts and entrepreneurship training.

Problak has demonstrated a continued commitment to passing on the tools, techniques and traditions he has learned to the next generation of artists, serving as both mentor and inspiration to countless young people through his work as a co-founder and studio manager at Artists for Humanity. Rob has conducted arts/youth mentoring workshops for Girls, Inc., The Boston Foundation, Boston Housing Authority, and Youth Build, Washington, DC. Gibbs is a recipient of a number of awards, including The Goodnight Initiative’s Civic Artist Award, and The Mass Industry Committee’s 2006 Graffiti Artist of the Year award. He has also served as a guest lecturer, teaching one-day sessions on graffiti art and culture to students in Northeastern University’s Foundations of Black Culture: HipHop course.

With an extensive repertoire in several media, Problak’s work has challenged both the viewer and himself the artist, to see and celebrate graffiti’s evolution for over 15 years. His work as a solo artist and as a member of Boston’s A.L.A crew, has been seen across the world, in exhibitions such as All City Evolution, at the Fourth Wall Gallery in Boston, MA, and The Sharpie Show at Crewest in Los Angeles, CA.

GROWING BUZZ OF STREET ART BIZ SAYS KCET

The Growing Buzz of Street Art Biz

"Never mind restoring a Los Angeles art aesthetic. Downtown seems determined to be "The Mural Economic Capital Of The World."
After its underground beginnings during 1970s New York, the last decade has seen street art become a close working partner with entrepreneurship. In many cases that includes murals. It's a delicate balance of commentary and business fueled by pop-art populism.
First, one has to admit that ethnic-based murals sometimes keeps its distance, since most of that authorship prefer to voice the underserved. Street art, on the other hand, is about city residency and experience -- or at least visitation rights by suburbanites -- without needing an exclusive tie to ethnicity.
That broader appeal works on several levels. When it borders on the fringe of fine art in urban public space, an urgent primal coded message is found on dinged abandoned blocks, passing on a secret to those looking for it. When it's placed on a large wall, it's pointed out as public art, and in Los Angeles, part of a larger legacy.
When street art killer bees pollinate the street art movement by blogging and tweeting out global images, it creates a demand, as seen in April around downtown Los Angeles.
During Art Walk, Brit Week opened at Farmer's And Merchant's Bank to bring awareness to creativity and innovation between Britain and the U.S. This lead-in to this Summer's Olympic Games in London will have the T4C Artists Competition Closing Ceremony and Art Battle LA,billed as a live competition "between four notorious names in the London and Los Angeles street and graffiti art scenes." Los Angeles' Man One and Mear One will be pitted against UK's Inkie and Eine on Thursday, April 26, at the Continental Gallery (408 S. Spring Street) to paint on recycled furniture pieces designed by Christopher Guy.
That project shows how Los Angeles packages street art as a creative import for the city."

JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE PIECE: (M 9.0)

IMG_1109

TITLE: (M 9.0)
The title signifies the magnitude of the earthquake that shook Japan.
‘M’ is the magnitude and ‘9.0’ is the strength of the earthquake.

MATERIALS:
Mixed media - Japanese newspapers, ink, acrylic, and spray paint imported from Japan.

DESCRIPTION:
On March 11th 2011 at 4:46pm (March 10, 2011 at 09:46:23 PM for PST) near the coast of Honshu, Japan an epic disaster unfolded. The country would never be the same.
On the other side of the Pacific Ocean Mr. Martinez saw the double destruction of the tsunami and earthquake unfold on TV. As he watched complete villages disappear and the missing numbers of people increase, he felt compelled to do something. He began compiling newspapers documenting the tragic events, using imported spray paint from Japan, Japanese paintbrushes and ink to produce as his tribute, (M 9.0) in April 2011.
Mr. Martinez’s (M 9.0) prints were sold online and through word of mouth. The sales of the prints were donated to the relief efforts for victims of this tragic double disaster.

As a youth Mr. Martinez always dreamed of going to Japan and have always been fascinated with the culture. In 2008 he finally had the opportunity to not only visit Japan for the first time but also promote an art show/release party of his book, The Ulysses Guide to the Los Angeles River, a collaborative project with three fellow artists. GK Editions, a Japanese publishing company, published the book early 2008. The experience was not only amazing but mind blowing. It surpassed Mr. Martinez’s expectations; to put it simply he fell in love with Japan. He fell in love with the people, the food, the culture and its history. Mr. Martinez took so much from the 2008 trip that he vowed to give something back to show his solidarity with the people of Japan.

Crewest will be the first gallery to display (M 9.0)

(M 9.0)

Giclee prints on paper (32"x22") are available $180 each.
