INSTALL DAY WITH RELIC

On Wednesday, August 1, 2012 we began install day #1 with RELIC.  We had a lot of fun seeing the new show come together.  A lot of the work is vibrantly colored, very nicely framed and thick with acrylics and spray paint.  RELIC explained that there is a lot of him, his culture and substance in each of his pieces, especially in his piece "Jeepney" where a lot of the artist exists within the frame.  We appreciate RELIC's hard work in putting together his newest show "KUYA".  We hope everyone can join us Saturday, August, 4, 2012 as we open the doors to this brand new show.  We can't wait for you to see it.

For questions, please email us at info@crewest.com.

ABOUT THE SHOW: MYTHOGRAFF

MYTHOGRAFF, Werc's first solo show in Los Angeles, presents a continuous exploration of myth culture, consumerism, rituals, archetypal language and design. Werc has been spraying for 20 years and has grown in a journey with the medium by exploring, and deconstructing the spray paint to reinvent his own practice. Traditionally in spray-painting it is all about "can control," by creating artwork that is precise, defined, and clean. This is evident in Werc's "Axis Mundi" series, where he pushes the boundaries of the medium by creating photo-realistic portraits. Through his exploration of refined definition, Werc explores the opposite spectrum of control. In the "Ojo de Dios" series Werc frees himself & the medium with a loose and unrefined spraying technique, where he allows the spray paint to speak its natural language. Created with minimal immediate spray-paint strokes, the pieces are raw perceptual renditions refined by the eye of the viewer, not the medium.

The show will also feature Werc's classic style of multimedia collage, where he playfully re-appropriates commonly consumed logos to create new associations. In all of Werc's pieces there is a sense of magical realism, a hybrid existence of reality where there is a balance between the material world co-existing with the elements of the ethereal.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: AXIS

Photo by: Eriberto Oriol © ForbiddenArtLA.com

Showing in June at Crewest Gallery in the Front Room is AXIS.

Here is a little background on the artist as well as a sneak peak image of artwork AXIS will be showing during his solo show "RECLUSE":

AXIS (born March 26, 1973 in London, England) is a contemporary illustrator/working class fine artist who emerged from Los Angeles’ seminal graffiti scene in the 1980s. He is most noted for his convoluted and hyper-stylized freehand characters.

As a child, Axis moved from London to Los Angeles with his family and developed a number of musical and artistic influences including Mozart, Black Sabbath, Frank Frazetta, Rick Griffin, Black Flag, Norman Rockwell, and even Monty Python’s Flying Circus. An early convert to skateboarding and punk rock, Axis began experimenting with graffiti art in 1985, and joined L.A.’s legendary CBS Crew in 1988. By the mid-90’s he had cemented his reputation as one of the most prolific street artists working in Los Angeles. Though his career has largely unfolded outside of the graffiti landscape, his skate-punk origins continue to shape his engorged aesthetic and politicized black humor.

In addition to his artwork, Axis is also widely known as a musician. Having received formal music training (harpsichord, cello, piano) at a young age, Axis formed Los Angeles hard-core/Metal band “The Pain” (lead guitarist, songwriter) in 2004. He has recorded two full-length albums and has toured Europe and the United States.

Axis lives in Los Angeles, California where he continues to paint, and play music everyday. And he skates when he can.

To see more of Axis’ work, check out www.stylepig.com.

Artwork by AXIS will be on display June 14 through July 1 at Crewest.  Please email us at info@crewest.com with any questions.

CANceptual [v.3]
"Recycle your spray cans...make some art...save the Earth"

Exhibit Dates: May 2nd thru May 31st
Opening Reception: May 2nd from 6pm to 9pm

Crewest saves the Earth one spray can at a time. For the past 7 years, Crewest has been at the forefront of recognizing graffiti art as a unique and valid art form with aerosol cans as one of it’s primary mediums. In support of the many artists who have chosen to use their talents for something positive, Crewest celebrates their 7th Year Anniversary and brings you the third installment of CANceptual. An art exhibition giving young artists an opportunity to showcase their work alongside known artists. Crewest encourages artists to find those old rusted cans and recycle them by turning them into fine art pieces for sale at the gallery.
