VETERANO BY OSCAR MAGALLANES

Oscar Magallanes has shown at Crewest on numerous occasions and was even our featured artist for last year’s Top of the Dome. Now, Oscar Magallanes currently has on display another one of his signature style pieces “Veterano” during our Faces of Skid Row Exhibition.

Veterano is a representation of the beliefs of the artist and is mixed media on wood.

The artist’s statement of beliefs are as follows:

“I believe we need to identify that which is harmful to our community and our environments and we must actively work towards positive change. I also believe that we as a community need to educate ourselves in our history in order to provide a strong basis as to who we are as people of our descent and help celebrate our cultures and the struggles that we, and those before us have persevered. I am an artist, and it is with these beliefs that I create my art."

SKID ROW BY MIKE THE POET

We were truly lucky to have Mike the Poet, a spoken word artist and performer, come out at the Opening of Faces of Skid Row on October 2, 2010. His performance had energy and his words were powerful. The truth was spoken.

We would like to share the following piece by Mike the Poet "Skid Row" which was exclusively written for the his "Faces of Skid Row" opening night performance:

Skid Row
By Mike the Poet

Skid Row intersects
With the Toy District
But don’t get it twisted
It’s no place for kids.
Skid Row shrinks & grows
When the sun sets.
The industrial back streets
Of Skid Row by day
Do brisk business.
Hong Kong Wholesale,
Apparel, Textile Warehouses,
Underground sweatshops,
Fabric stores & Fish Markets.
When commerce closes down
go the metal garage doors
And out come the homeless.
By day they can be found in
Single-room occupancies,
Basketball courts, porta-potties,
Brick buildings & back alleys.
The Midnight Mission &
League of Women
are a small safety net.
Still not nearly enough beds,
Cardboard boxes
Are used instead;
Spread over 10 square blocks.
Lighters flicker on & off,
Some are here on purpose,
Some on accident &
Some were left.
All of them are
Sleeping with
One eye open,
Trash cans on fire,
Packs of tents,
The brave ones sleep alone.
It’s a short distance between
Heaven & hell
Along the Nickel.
Los Angeles Street
Is the Berlin Wall --
A liminal thoroughfare
East of Luxury Loft Land.
Steps away from
Adaptive Reuse,
A few blocks away
From Pussy & Pooch.
Ice Skating in Pershing Square,
The Oscars at the Biltmore,
Hybrid Showroom-Boutiques
In the Historic Core are next door
To Skid Row watering holes.
This has happened before
On the Lower Eastside &
San Francisco’s Mission District.
Redevelopment or Gentrification.
How do we reconcile
these merging worlds?
If we had the answers
Would Skid Row still be here?
Would they sleep somewhere else?
Would they sleep in the River?
To those stressed about the homeless,
What do you suggest?
People aren’t garbage,
They can’t be swept
In the recycling bin.
Furthermore the homeless
Were here before the lofts,
They were here before
The Art Walk.
They are a product of
Trickle Down Economics,
A product of the free market.
Emerson spoke of the Over-SouL
Today’s man is much more cold,
We are the richest country in the world,
But you’d never know on Skid Row..
Skid Row intersects
With the Toy District
But don’t get it twisted
It’s no place for kids.

PRESS RELEASE: FACES OF SKID ROW

PRESS RELEASE
September/27/2010

For Immediate Release
Media Contact:
Luna George
818.235.4598
luna@crewest.com

“We have homeless women, men, children, the young and the elderly, roaming the streets in Downtown Los Angeles without a home or shelter for the night or a cot to sleep in. Food is scarce and hard to come by to the homeless. We have those who are ill or who have been injured and most have very little medical resources if any at all.

We have seen these homeless people, whether sitting on the curbside picking at their dead skin on their hands or covered in a cardboard shelter for the evening. People of L.A., you are invited to explore the Faces of Skid Row and to participate in a large fundraiser for The Midnight Mission to benefit those living homeless.”

Los Angeles, CA – Crewest and Curator Luna George are proud to present Faces of Skid Row. Faces of Skid Row is an exhibition and fundraiser for The Midnight Mission to bring awareness and focus on the homeless living in the Skid Row area in Downtown Los Angeles. The exhibition’s artwork aims to raise questions to its viewers as to what we can do to further help the people of Skid Row. The artists in this exhibition are all LA based and form an eclectic union of diverse genres. Graffiti artists, photographers, illustrators, sculptors, street artists and fine artists have all come together as one to bring you an exhibition full of sincerity, hope, reality, essence and bringing forward core issues revealed through eye-catching, heartfelt art. The Opening Reception will take place Saturday, October 2nd, 2010 from 6pm to 9 pm and will feature a live spoken word performance by Mike the Poet who has written a piece exclusively for the show. His words are powerful and will affect the heart and the mind. The Exhibition runs through October 31st, 2010.

Curator Statement:
The concept of Faces of Skid Row was created because there was a “heart-felt and serious need to help those living on Skid Row” says curator Luna George. “Bringing together this wonderful group of artists was the best way I could accomplish getting the message out to help the people of Skid Row. These artists have a way of creating pieces which captures your eye because it’s fresh, bold and definitely different. Sometimes when a message needs to be said, art is the best way to say it.” Faces of Skid Row marks the very first curatorial work presented by Luna George. All artists in the show were carefully selected by the curator due to a charismatic talent each possess within their specific genre. Each artist has been carefully observed over the years and the curator knew this show would be perfect for them to express and display their charismatic works for the public to enjoy.

In the Featured Artist Room:
Mason Brown presents “Do you know what time it is? Clocky does…” an installation created purely using only cardboard featuring the world of “Clocky”. Clocky is a fortune telling machine cloaked under the guise of a temporal devise. Clocky is assumed to behold infinite wisdom and can predict future events. Powered by the unknown, Clocky is marked by emblematic symbols including – but not limited to: owls, stars, checkers, moons, and all seeing eye that eternally sits and watches over us all. Featured artist Mason Brown is a graphic artist and filmmaker. Brown founded Cardboard Robot as an extension of various milti-media projects developed by the artist. Resulting from exhaustive research into the realm of religious mysticism and secret questions, Clocky is the invention of Mason Brown – Founder and Creative Director of Cardboard Robot. A veteran of Desert Storm, much of Brown’s work is aimed at promoting social awareness through politically charged images. This is an installation you do not want to miss. Brown welcomes you to the world of “Clocky”.

Paredes was born in New York and is of a Latin American descent.

Growing up on 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Paredes exuded early signs of artistic ability and accepted an invitation to New York City’s prestigious Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art – immortalized in the musical and movie Fame – in the early 1980s.

His studies at Fiorello coincided with the explosion of street culture in the city. Paredes drew inspiration from notorious pop artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and plunged into the world of graffiti and pop art taking the name “Mist” as his moniker.

AVAILABLE ARTWORK: SCOTCH!

WE NOW HAVE ARTWORK AVAILABLE BY SCOTCH!

Scotch continues to push for new techniques/ideas that people of all ages & genres can enjoy.

About the Artwork:

ELDERS: Good and evil battle for an orb that represents consciousness, which controls life. Life is the result of the struggle between dynamic opposites. Form & Chaos, Light & Darkness, Substance & Oblivion, and all the different variations of Yin & Yang. When the pendulum swings in favor of one it eventually swings in favor of it's opposite thus the balance of the universe is maintained.

JUMP: –verb (used without object)
1. to spring clear of the ground or other support by a sudden muscular effort; leap: to jump into the air.

Growing up in the Star Wars culture, Scotch tends to use elements from Star Wars in his pieces; preferably the storm trooper. This is another silly mashup created to bring fun, push technicality and to make someone smile.

(ELDERS, 18x30 inches, Stencil, tape, spray paint, $1,800)

(JUMP!, 18x26 inches, Stencil & spray paint, $1,500)

IF INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A PIECE BY SCOTCH, PLEASE EMAIL US AT INFO@CREWEST.COM OR CALL US AT THE GALLERY AT 213-627-8272.

Most of Broken Crow’s works focuses on transplanting wild animals into the urban habitats in which humans live in (typically on a large scale), and these pieces are one of their first attempts at achieving their large scale ideas on a smaller scale.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS OF FRIENDS WITH KNIVES

Here is a little glimpse at the artists of Friends with Knives (Opening August 7th, 2010):

• Banksy in his unofficial biography famously said of Blek Le Rat, “Everytime I think I've painted something original I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only 20 years earlier'. Blek Le Rat often described as the Godfather of Stencil Art was the first to use stencils for silhouettes on the streets of Paris, he has been investigating the urban space for over 28 years and still continues to inspire urban artists all over the world.

PaperMonster’s vivid and intricate pieces explore the beauty behind the eyes and facial expressions of women.

Broken Crow's art features various animals and anthropomorphic humanoids in crazy colors and extreme sizes. Through painting they seek to reintroduce wild animals back into urban habitats, writing their own mythologies as they go.

Chris Stain’s work and its themes find a kinship with the American social-realist movement of the early 20th century.

Kolezar experiments with things like color, detail and scale to challenge preconceptions of what can be accomplished with stenciling.

Nathan Phaneuf focuses on more minimal pieces that accentuate the women he photographs for his pieces produced using the underlying wood as the main skin tone and negative space for his stencils.

Shai Dahan is recognized for his talent of hand painting skateboards as well as creating his animalguns designs on the streets of Los Angeles and New York using stencils, wheatpastes and other mediums as well.

Peat Wollaeger (stenSOUL) is internationally known stencil artist famous for his signature EYEZ , raw colorful characters and stencil videos.

Dave Lowell works with a combination of multi-layer stencils and freehand spraying.

E.L.K is fast becoming well respected amongst his peers and in much demand nationally for his approach to photo-realistic stenciling.

• By using multi-layered stencils of up to 60 layers HAHA’s work is a reflection of Austrailian popular culture.

Joe Iurato just launched a new series of portraits featuring a selection of musicians performing the famous song “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess.

Henry Quiara is an artist/designer of lowbrow, urban contemporary and counter culture art.

Greg Boudreau specializes in making the ordinary extraordinary.

Mefee, a true definition of an anomaly. Mefee works as a scarification artists providing surgical implants underneath the skin in which his skill with a scalpol is easily transfered into his stencil work creating precision cut pieces.

Leckomio’s works deal with street art and graffiti as a subject, as shown by B-boys or the hyper-realistic representation of urban landscapes tagged for sky to bitumen.

Scotch! continues to push for new techniques/ideas that people of all ages & genres can enjoy.

Hope to see everyone at the opening!

SWEET THINGS COMING TO AN END

Sweet Things is coming to an end and we wanted to share some of our most memorable moments:

The giveaways from Kid Robot were a smashing hit!

We had posters to give to guests as well.

Even the notorious bike riders dropped by.

You should have seen this huge ass bike. It was crazy!

Curator "Queen Andrea" flew out for the opening. We missed you Indie. We love you Indie and thank you both for bringing together a great show. You ladies are on fire!

Featured artist Sherm came through and represented in front of her installation.

Happy Friandise shipped some of her furry little purses all the way from France just for the occasion and just for the girls!

The live painting was totally cool.

And even sometimes the smaller things just like this truck who stopped by is enough to remember. Artful moments are always sure to happen, they can be planned or unexpected. Whatever the moments be, we love each and every one.

Big thanks to curators Indie and Queen Andrea, Aiko, Martha Cooper, Gillian Goldstein, Motel7, Koralie, Mickey, Jules Muck, Klor, Sherm, Jarritos, Roaring Lion, Kid Robot, Estria, M.I.S.S and all those who came out to support.

Till next time!

INSIGHT INTO THE WORKS OF MICK LA ROCK

Sweet Things is coming to an end and we would hate to not be able to share with you the following insight regarding the works of Mick La Rock which are available and ready for just the right collector:

“In both works there is lettering. It says my name (my heritage as a graffiti writer). The style I developed over the last 10 years.

In the first half of the 2000's I painted it on walls. Painting these lines is hard to do with spray paint: the result never as sharp as I have in mind. My urge to create lines by hand like they'd be computer vectors has driven me from the walls towards canvas.

The readability of the letters are minor importance than the shape and the composition of the word itself. Letters are rotated, pulled out of their basic shape. Letters are positioned and/or connected in unexpected directions.

Functions of the basic elements of a piece are changed: empty spaces between letters become letters themselves. The same can happen to the sections of fill-in colors.
The importance of the lettering in my work is emphasized by the four color palette. The use of black and white refer to (and show my love for) the traditional outline and highlight colors used in graffiti.” – Mick la Rock

"It's a long way"
Acrylic on canvas
100x120 cm
2010
$2200

"Sign of the Time"
Acrylic on canvas
100x120 cm
2009
$2200

Like mentioned before, these two pieces are still available and if you are interested in purchasing or would like to talk further please email us asap at info@crewest.com or contact the gallery at 213-627-8272.

Sweet Things is coming to an end tomorrow, don't miss out!
