REVOLUTIONS EXHIBIT: QUOTE BY PHADE (TC-5)

Picture a slice of New York City history cut out with an x-acto blade and paste with rubber cement smack dab in the middle of a map of downtown LA.

Well on March 6th 2010 that is exactly what's about to take place. Shirt King Phade and the TC5 (TheCool5) will be landing on the runway at downtown LA's Crewest Gallery.

The expectation and magnitude of this show coming together is highly anticipated.

Coming in peace, TC5 will not only show off their skills as stylemasters of a culture which started on NY but also begin to trace the roots of the Hip Hop visual aspect of Graffiti.

Phade a legend on the New York City subway system lends his story showing how the evolution of graffiti from the gritty competitive atmosphere to creating one of the first hand drawn t-shirts and sweat shirt apparel worn by pioneering rappers for their videos, thus enhancing their image and giving Hip Hop a uniform.

TC5 crew boast of a roster of very talented artist from all over the world. TC5 originally birthed in the 70's as The Crazy 5 was given in the mid eighties to Phade and Lil Seen. Phade had his own crew TNT to deal with so lil Seen ran with it, changed the name got new spirit and breathed life into a defunct historical crew.

TC5 still paints all over the world (TC-5.com) some members are today's top designers and work for the likes of Sean John, Akademics, RocaweAr, and more(revokt.com).

Doze an original member of The Roc Steady Crew bboy ensemble is also an original Cool 5 member also Lady Pink, lil Seen, Phade, pop master Fable all attended The High School of Art& Design in NYC at the same time. They all have gone on to become prolific in their respective areas of their craft. Thus completing the cycle of going and being legit and making a difference in a younger generation of graff artist that there is life after trains creating an on going revolution.- Ed Sacasa

Revolutions
March 6th, 2010 – March 28th, 2010

Los Angeles, CA – Crewest Gallery, in association with Insurgency Inc, is proud to present REVOLUTIONS, on view from March 6th, 2010 to March 28th, 2010.

REVOLUTIONS exposes the history of the graffiti, fashion and cultural revolutions in New York City birthed, nurtured and maintained by The Cool Five otherwise known as TC-5. “New York, during the mid-1980's, was an amazing time for graffiti writers. Trains were crushed, styles were poppin, and TC-5 was one of the main crews at the forefront of the thriving graffiti scene. The crew's roots originate from the early 1970's with The Crazy 5, which was a legendary crew from the Bronx with an impressive roster consisting of BLADE, DEATH, VAMM, TULL 13, CRACHEE, and later AJAX, COMET, SILVER TIPS, and MAZE… After most of the original members of The Crazy 5 had retired, in a somewhat controversial move at the time, COMET granted presidency of TC-5 to a writer from the Bronx named SEEN (or as some called him, Lil' SEEN). SEEN reshaped the crew with some of the freshest writers of his generation such as BEAM, JUICE, DOZE, DOC, LADY PINK, as well as expanding the crew primarily from the Bronx into a true All-City force.” – tcfive.com

The artists in the exhibit are some of the freshest graffiti artists known in the New York Graffiti scene. Together they will illuminate the walls of Crewest Gallery and will present artwork with a cool and creative combination of classic and new school graffiti styles mixed with fine art.

Along with this exhibit, will also be a Fashion show on March 20th, 2010 featuring customized clothing by TC-5 taking place during LA Fashion week. The fashion show will feature custom painted denim and tees designed specifically for REVOLUTIONS. “Imagine a Mickey [Mouse] wearing Air Jordans, leaning on a Moët bottle crowned with a dukey rope chain around his neck, dripping in gold and saying your favorite songs hook.” This was the beginning. This is the future. This is classic hip-hop style. Welcome to the world of Shirt King Phade, one-third of the unrivaled founding fathers’ of cartoon and graffiti inspired airbrushed clothing, The Shirt Kings and member of the legendary TC-5 crew of NYC. Legendary for one of a kind, of-the-moment wearable works of art that adorned t-shirts, jeans, jackets -whatever you could think of – on the backs of everyone from LL Cool J, to Salt-n-Pepa, to Theo Huxtable in the early 80’s, Phade laid THE foundation for the street inspired urban revolution we now call ‘hip-hop fashion.’” - Citizen LA, 2009

Join Crewest for a once in a lifetime chance to see the artists, art and fashion from NYC’s premiere street crew all under one roof for the first time in Los Angeles. The month long event will include live painting, an airbrush installation, a fashion show, memorabilia from the early years of TC-5, live performances and of course the art and artists themselves.

Exhibiting Artists:
Seen, Doze Green, Doc/Arab, Phade, Totem, Abby, Cycle, Lady Pink, Mr. Wiggles, Yourz, Web, Keo, Bom 5, EBN, Sye, Aevon.

Crewest officially opens a new “Featured Artist Room” on February 6th, 2010.

Crewest_PI_party36

This new Featured Artist Room will feature monthly installations by featured artists selected by Crewest. Kicking off inside this new room, Crewest presents “Life Inside” a collaborative installation, directed under Edgar "OSOK" Hoill, featuring the creative works of Adrian Nieto, John Jarasa, Gregg Stone, Juan Sanchez Jr., Salim Assid Jr., Elena Dominguez, David Montes and Rafael Vasquez.

Dedicated and inspired by the trying times of prison, this moving installation brings patrons into the underground world of the prison system as well as the lifestyle which landed them there. Its central focus is to bring the best out of a world gone wrong and it's an artistic portrayal of the beauty found and created in a world most often times associated with negative stereotypes and grim outlooks.

LETTERS FROM ARTISTS BEHIND BARS

Prison INC is an exhibit featuring a large collection of works created by incarcerated artists living behind bars is curated by Gregg Stone, a very talented artist. After spending years of collecting the art and corresponding with artist inmates Gregg Stone, an enthusiastic collector of Prison Art, wanted an exhibit which allowed these artists an oppurtunity to have their talent recognized. Crewest wanted the same as Gregg.

Prison INC. has been a success for the mere fact that those who have seen the artwork on display can all agree that the quality of the work is better than one would expect. Considering the obstacles an artist behind bars would encounter such as lack of supplies and even censorship by the prison who does not permit that which they think is inappropriate, these artists have really proven their skill.

We invite you to get up close and personal with each of the Prison INC. exhibiting artists. Take a moment to reflect on the obstacles an artist behind bars could face and open your eyes to how those artists make use of their time by mastering their skill and being who they areand rather be, an artist.

See below for letters from Oscar Campos, an artist currently living behind bars and a participating artist in Prison INC.:

Artwork by Oscar Campos "Slipping Into Darkness:

Prison INC. is on view through February 27th, 2010 at Crewest.

CREWEST X LA COUNTY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION

We were asked to curate a live painting and stencil event for LA County's Holiday Celebration '09 event at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center in Downtown LA.

Artists, Asylm and Sherm, painted Holiday themed aerosol paintings while our other staff helped create stencil paintings for the kids and families who showed up on Christmas Eve for this annual free event.

Here's a festive time lapse video of the live painting:
(btw..the two paintings are available for purchase!)

We were happy to bring Holiday cheer to this community event!
Seems like the families who showed up enjoyed it as well, check out
