ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: OBLIGADO A DESOBEDECER

“In order to truly delve into Satter’s work, we must rid ourselves of prejudices and established conventions, to recognize ourselves in our most human dimension, that which deteriorates, guzzles and secretes; fragile and real, like it is to walk among the residual fluids of modernity; even to explore our tanatological impulses, our self-destructive condition that preys upon nature, that side which we would like to hide, which produces nausea, shame and repulsion. Throughout history, the abject has been banished from the conservative aesthetic ideal; the disgusting was left outside the dominion of the beautiful and of art itself.  Nevertheless, many artists have immersed themselves in this dark and transgressive realm, like Goya, Bacon or Lynch, to name a few.

Satter positions himself as an artist of the urban realm who explores this dimension.  He does this not only as a game or as taking joy in repulsion, but as a critical space that permits a consideration of the conflicts of globalized and industrialized society, absorbed by a morbid capitalism masked by humanity, affection and desire.  The central axis in the series that Satter presents, relates to religion as a body of double standards that hides the sexual impulse, as he devises these forbidden references where religious symbols and sexual organs coexist practically in a gratuitous way.  We also see a critique of the conditions of capitalist cultural circulation, from forms of consumption in eating, drinking, dressing and shitting, to the canonized way we do cultural interpretations of prehispanic, modern and contemporary art.

Satter’s sarcastic, abject and unbounded recovery is in putting his sight on that ominous area which is always denied, in the dismantling of a subjectivity that is squashed under the light of recognition, like that mythical mirror that reflects an overwhelming, hybrid and deformed image that is what we hide, but that is in reality, what we are.” - Said Dokins 2012

BIG TIME MAGAZINE @ CREWEST

We found it only appropriate that we bring back Big Time Magazine just in time for the opening of RELIC's new solo show "KUYA".  RELIC and TEMPT started Big Time Magazine back in the day, documenting some of the best graffiti from the earlier days.

Starting tonight, we will have available Issues 6 (2000) and 7 (2001).  If you ask, we may be able to get other issues for you too.  Each classic will be available for $15 each or $25 for two.

If interested in purchasing online, email us at info@crewest.com.

INSTALL DAY WITH WERC

Just arriving on Thursday from Texas with all of his artwork, WERC was ready for install for his upcoming solo show "Mythograff" which opens Saturday, August 4, 2012.  We don't want to reveal too much, but we know everyone will enjoy this show.  If you should have any questions regarding the artwork or need info on the artist, please email us at info@crewest.com

Hope to see everyone on Saturday night for the opening of Mythograff.

INSTALL DAY WITH RELIC

On Wednesday, August 1, 2012 we began install day #1 with RELIC.  We had a lot of fun seeing the new show come together.  A lot of the work is vibrantly colored, very nicely framed and thick with acrylics and spray paint.  RELIC explained that there is a lot of him, his culture and substance in each of his pieces, especially in his piece "Jeepney" where a lot of the artist exists within the frame.  We appreciate RELIC's hard work in putting together his newest show "KUYA".  We hope everyone can join us Saturday, August, 4, 2012 as we open the doors to this brand new show.  We can't wait for you to see it.

For questions, please email us at info@crewest.com.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: RELIC

L.A. writer RELIC blends urban style and sensibility with renaissance-quality execution.

Staking claim to the name in ‘87, Relic found that graffiti was the spark that ignited his creativity. He found comrades in the Second To None art crew (successors of L.A.’s first graffiti crew) who helped propel his work by providing inspiration and guidance through art and expression.

Armed with the knowledge that there could be a lucrative career in art, he enrolled at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design.

The following years brought opportunities highlighted by the creation of murals and art for numerous motion pictures and television shows. Knowledge combined with scholastic discipline provided the necessary elements to extend his skills into art directing.

In 1996, Relic and Tempt co-founded BIGTIME: The Magazine of Urban Art & Expression. Their contributions have set industry standards, gaining BIGTIME acclaim as the “Best Graffiti Magazine” by the LA Weekly.

Relic’s work has been showcased at numerous museums and galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Smithsonian.

Graffiti art has gained worldwide attention. It extends its hand and appeals to all people of today’s diverse culture. At the forefront of this new generation is RELIC who—for over 25 years—has propelled L.A. graffiti art to the forefront of today’s urban audience.

In August 2012, RELIC will be presenting in the Crewest Front Gallery his very first LA solo show, KUYA.  KUYA opens Saturday, August 4, 2012 and will be on view through August 28, 2012.
